Google’s First Cars

Self-driving cars are clearly coming, and Google gives us a first view that is enticing, demonstrating just where self-driving cars may take us first as part of the thin edge of a wedge of driving automation. They make two very smart first moves: first, they have built a car with no steering wheel controls whatsoever, making the self-driving nature of the machine not just a ‘feature,’ but a core part of the car’s DNA.  Second, they are limiting its speed to 25 miles per hour for early pilots, and this will certainly provide a degree of confidence to early testers.  Watching the car drive by, you can begin imagining these, mixed in with Mini Coopers and other cars on the residential street in front of your house.  There will be road blocks, of course. But the visioning begins now:
