Daleks and Employment

Hannah Kuchler at the Financial Times just published an article about robots that do cognitive work and how they begin to displace human workers:White-collar robots roll into schools, hospitals and offices. The article starts with the somewhat absurd, Dalek-like robot sentry concept next to a school bus, but then dives into very real examples, from Aethon‘s hospital delivery drones to “robotic” automated software from Blue Prism that fill forms out more accurately than humans. The article is yet another reminder that productivity enhancement, particularly as robots begin displacing regular cognitive functions that were the province of humans alone, yields future employment dynamics that we really don’t fully comprehend.
