There is a section in Robot Futures where I talk about information networking, and the ultimate Google for highly networked robotics. It seems that progress may accelerate on the path toward ever-greater automation given Google’s recent acquisitions. I explained to Yahoo Finance that the societal debate we need to have about this is not only about privacy but also about employment. We are heading ever faster down the path to few job categories where humans have the exclusive right to work; and whereas we people don’t get cheaper, the ‘bots become less expensive to run every year with advancing innovation. An interesting exercise: take a look at the public comments below news stories on Google’s acquisition and note just how many of them are about jobs. Readers are starting to understand the long-term consequences of android innovation well before companies’ PR departments and journalists.
