Reality goes Retro-Cool

In this past Friday’s NYT Weekend Arts section, Anand Giridharadas writes about “I am here” days- when he and his friends attempt a freakishly new style of life: turn off the social media gadgets and spend the entire day walking about with friends, as if it’s, say, 1982. In my chapter on Attention Dilution Disorder I take the complement of this to its bitter end, when individuals exist in so many places at once they are never, really anywhere in particular: “We are never here.” It is nice to see the retro-chic of walking, in a town, with friends, without technology, reported in the Times. Enjoy the article and chuckle at just how new this old strategem might feel.
