Drone Wars, v2.0

Thanks to Dr. Frank Sauer of the Budeswehr University Munich and ICRAC, the International Committee for Robot Arms Control, for pointing out to me a Spiegel Online article about Germany’s plans to arm their future drones for combat duty. Their are several opinions in the article that reflect some thoughts in “Dehumanizing Robots” such as: “Aircraft are allowed to carry weapons, so why shouldn’t an unmanned aircraft also be able to do so?” askes a member of the ruling German CDU party. If we think of robots as nothing more than a gentle evolutionary step forward, policymakers connect the dots in ways that cause downstream consequences we cannot imagine earlier, and this story is apparently going to repeat itself throughout first-world countries, one by one.
